Publishers Weekly has this to say about the book:

The horrors of a war-ravaged world again invade a hard-won peace in Brooks's intense follow-up to 2008's The Gypsy Morph. Five hundred years have passed since Hawk led a tattered band of survivors into a valley protected by a magical barrier. Now the wall has been breached. The last known Knight of the Word, Sider Ament, wields a powerful black staff that he hopes to pass to a new leader. After rescuing talented teen Trackers Panterra Qu and Prue Liss, Sider asks them to warn the Children of Hawk. Unfortunately, their council leaders don't share Sider's certainty of an impending invasion. While Sider explores the other side of the barrier, the young Trackers find help from Arborlon Elves in this superlative Tolkien-style fantasy tweaked with a contemporary vibe. (Sept.)

History

Plot Summary

Bearers of the Black Staff begins with the last Knight of the Word Sider Ament doing his regular rounds around the outskirts of the misty veil that encloses the descendants of Hawk. He has been diligently circling the veil knowing that within his lifetime the mist that has been surrounding the survivors will fail and encounters with those that survived in the ravaged and poisoned outer world will begin. He comes upon the entrance of something he knows to be powerful that broke through some of his magical barriers and warnings. After resetting them he begins tracking what he finds is two large creatures. At the same time, the young Human Trackers Panterra Qu and Prue Liss discover the remains of two experienced trackers and friends killed by the creatures. They begin tracking to find out what they are. Led into a trap by the creatures, Pan and Prue are saved by the timely arrival of Sider Ament just before they would have stumbled into the trap. Sider Ament saves Prue, and manages to kill one of the creatures. The other flees after getting hurt by the magic of Sider Ament. Before giving chase to the second beast, Sider Ament enlists the help of Pan and Prue. He charges the two young trackers with the task of going back to the cities, starting with Glensk Wood, and trying to warn any who will listen of the danger soon to come.
