Description

Mareth describes Cogline thusly:

He was strange-looking, tall and thin, all angles and bones, pinch-faced and wild-haired. He seemed constantly distracted by his thoughts, as if it were the most difficult thing in the world to hold a simple conversation.[1]

Bremen describes Cogline's personality as

this business of sending you off to Paranor to learn about your magic, giving you false references, encouraging you to dissemble-that sounds exactly like him. Cogline has no love for the Druids. He would tweak their collective noses at the slightest provocation.[2]

Cogline was:

...tall and stooped, a bony, ragged figure, rather disheveled and unkempt. His hair was dark, but shot through with grey, and it stuck out from his angular head like a hedgehog's spine. A narrow, pointed beard jutted from his chin, and a mustache dropped off his upper lip. Lines creased his weathered face, furrows that marked more than the passing of his years.

Origin and History

Cogline was a Druid in the time of the First War of the Races. Relating to Brona on a level, Cogline believed all avenues of learning should be encouraged. Though a good and careful man, he was a rebel. In the time of Brona the Druid Council favored the research of magic. Cogline was interested in the lost sciences of the old world. He left the Druid Order before Brona, as a result of his disenchantment and frustrated with the restrictions to learning. Cogline found home in Darklin Reach and refused to call himself a Druid any longer.[3]

Cogline learned the Druid Sleep and permitted it as the only magic he would use. As a result, Cogline's life spanned nearly one thousand years.

Cogline's Cats

Cogline was known to befriend Moor Cats. He used them to screen out unwanted guests.

During the Second War of the Races Cogline had a pair of Moor Cats, one male Shifter and the other Female Smoke, brother and sister. Cogline had rescued them when they were kittens. He had found them abandoned in the swamp regions of Olden Moor.[4]

Second War of the Races

By the time of the Second War of the Races kept in regular contact with the Stors, preferring to deal with them to obtain supplies and information when he needed it rather than deal with the trading posts that dotted the central Anar around Darklin Reach.[5]

Bremen, Mareth and Kinson Ravenlock traveled to Hearthstone, Cogline's home to speak with him. Bremen brought news of the war and the death of all the Druids. Over dinner Bremen asked Cogline for a formula to forge a sword that would be incredibly strong and very light. Cogline was very resistant to sharing his knowledge. It took Bremen some time to coax the once-druid to share his knowledge. Once he did, he asked them to leave in the morning.
