From The World of Shannara

Dwarves in the Shannara are a hearty people, smaller and stout of stature. The live predominately in the Lower Anar of the Eastland and are bitter enemies to the Gnome tribes that live to the north of them

Birth of the Dwarves

The great Holocaust that destroyed the Old World, killed most of the inhabitants of the world. Yet some miraculously survived, and struggled to survive over the next thousand years. There where those that lived by burrowing deep underground to escape the holocaust. They fed on animals and fungus that lived underground. Over time their bodies began to change. Survival smiled upon shorter, stockier bodies with powerful musculature and eyes that could see in the inky darkness of the underground world. By the time they reemerged to the surface world, they were a new race different than man with their own language and culture. ^[1]
