He was a warrior king having grown up on the frontiers wilds between the Gnomes and Dwarves, spending his entire life in battle. When crowned king he pursued war against the Gnomes with singleminded determination to keep the lands of the Central and Lower Anar in Dwarven hands. SO frightening and successful was he at this, that he managed to push the Gnomes tribes back beyond the Rabb and east of the Silver River that the Dwarf lands where twice their previous size, and the Gnomes no longer threatened the Dwarf homelands. For the first time in centuries, all that lay between was safe for Dwarven settlement and habitation.

When the Northland army was coming south, Raybur mobilized the whole of the Dwarven army, abandoned Culhaven, and sent all the Women, children and elderly into the relative safety of the deep interior of the Anar. Then marched the Dwarf army north into the Wolksktaag to do what they could against the Northland army.

Raybur was a big man, not in height, but broad and strong through the chest and shoulders, with a huge head and weathered face covered in a beard. Through is rough exterior he was a warm and exuberant Dwarf, quick to laugh.

Raybur was a master general and together with Risca, lead the Dwarven army in a very successful withdrawal across the Centeral and Lower Anar, delaying the Northland army. Finally they retreated from Stedden Keep deep into the Anar. When the Northland army left considering the Dwarves dealt with, Raybur sent the rest of his army north and west to help the elves after hearing word from Kinson Ravelock and Mareth. It was Raybur's force that was able to halt the remnants of the Northland army on the Streleheim, which allowed Jerle Shannara to defeat the Warlock Lord.[1]

Upon his return to the Eastland, Raybur rebuild all the towns and homes that had been razed by the Northlanders. He is the one that planned and had planted the Meade Gardens in Culhaven. It is there that he had the body of his best friend Risca buried. He rules the Dwarves in relative peace afterwards. His greatest legacy was the dams of Capaal. Being reclusive, distracted and shy man with little concern for anything beyond his work, Vree Erreden was not well regarded among most Elves. Vree did not himself make any claims to his accomplishments, the claims where made by others. Tay picked Vree to join his party in search of the Black Elfstone due to his skill in locating missing objects. When asked Vree simply asked him for his hands. Grabbing them, he was quick and Tay came to know that he had read the Druid's mind to find the vision that was there from Bremen.[10]

Twice during the journey to the Black Elfstone Vree's talents proved useful. One was in locating Preia Starle in a draw with horses, while the party was trying to out maneuver a Gnome hunting party. The vision had saved the party. The other was when he grabbed Jerle Shannara's hands and read his mind like he had done with Tay, to find out where the particular mountain they where looking for from the vision Bremen imparted. He searched Jerle's mind for a vision of mountains that match the vision he had received from reading Tay's mind. With that information they where able to easily reach their destination.

Afterwards the survivors return to Arborlon. Originally Jerle liked the locat not at all. But after the death of Tay they drew close together in a friendship, with Vree pledging his services to Jerle. A few weeks after their return, Vree pays Jerle a visit. Vree explained that when he had read Tay's mind, he had seen all four visions imparted by Bremen to Tay. Vree had a dream the previous night and it was made known to him that the vision of a man wielding a sword against the Warlock Lord was in fact Jerle. Jerle in his despondent, upside down world, refused to believe the vision of the locat and the words of Preia.

On Jerle's coronation Vree is made First Minister by the new king. He was left in Arborlon to manage the city and it's defenses while the Battle of Rhenn was being waged at the end of the Second War of the Races.
