Josie Jackson moved to Hopewell, and opens diner in town that was the favorite breakfast and lunch spot in Hopewell. Somewhere in her thirties, she purchased the diner with money lent to her by her parents, calling it Josie's. Having worked most of her adult life as a waitress, she knew what she was about, running it with a charm, efficiency and casual attitude that made everyone feel welcome.[2]

She was divorced and had one daughter.[2] Youthful and vivacious, Josie is forty-eight at the time of this novel, with tousled blond hair and a smile that no one ever forgot.[3] She is a member of the First Congressional Church and often helps with child care.

Paul is referenced as someone who Nest thinks about when she is around babies and children. Thinking of Paul was something painful for Nest from a past not described, but it can be inferred that she was likely in some kind of relationship with him and found she could not have children while with him.
