Caitlin Freemark is the mother of Nest and one of the Freemark women. Caitlin was killed three months[1] after Nest was born. She had fallen from the cliffs beyond Sinnissippi Park into the Rock River. She had been walking in the park late at night. She was a fragile and mercurial young woman and her frame of mind was in question. There had been speculation that she had committed suicide as she was deeply troubled after the birth of Nest and disappearance of the baby's father.[2]
Evelyn Freemark

Evelyn Freemark is the grandmother of Nest and one of the Freemark Women, being the wife to Robert Freemark. She is a straight talking, no nonsense woman. She was a small, intense woman with sharp eyes, soft features and gray hair. She was once beautiful, but her stubborn refusal to look after herself had made her simply old. She smoke and drank all the time.[3] Evelyn tends to get angry or avoids the subject of Nest's father, and as such Nest believes that she knows something about him that she is unwilling or unable to tell.[4]

Robert Roosevelt Freemark is the grandfather of Nest and is known as "Old Bob" to everyone but is wife, his granddaughter, and his minister. He was a retired foreman from MidCon steel works and a member of the Steel Workers Union.[5] He was six foot three inches, broad shouldered, having large hands and possessing a solidity about his that defyied his age of sixty-five. His face was square with prominent features and thick, wavy, snow white hair he combed straight back from his forehead. He always tended to wear jeans and blue work shirts, and thought of himself as being just like everyone else.[3] Old Bob is married to Evelyn and not very happily. Their relationship changed a great deal when thier daughter Caitlin died. They kept to seperate bedrooms for nearly ten years.[3] Old Bob had served in the Korean War, and came back to be a rock solid member of the Hopewell community. A dependable friend to all, staunch church goer, and had worked for and volutneers for many non-profits that benefited the community.[3]

Bennett Scott is the youngest sister to Jared Scott, and daughter to Enid Scott.

Brianna Brown is one of Nest's friends that she hangs out with every day. Of the group she was small, and pretty with delicate features[6] It was no secret that Brianna had been trained from very early on, by her mother, that she needed to "look the part". As such Brianna spent an inordinate amount of time making sure she looked good, wearing make-up, styling her hair, and being required to wear matching outfits (and to keep the impeccably clean).[7]

Cass Minter is a friend of Nest Freemark that had called the house twice on July 1st, and part of Nest's group of friends. She was a big, heavyset girl with a round cheerful, face and intelligent green eyes. She always wore jeans and loose-fitting shirts to cover he weight.[8]

Danny Abbott is two years older than Nest Freemark, a soon to be high school junior and thought he was the coolest thing in jeans. He was big, strong, good-looking, and dark-haired. A few months prior to July at a dance, he kissed Nest, and would not let go of his interest in her after that. He began talk to his friends saying that it had been much more than a kiss and she was anxious for more.
On July 1st he had started talking to Nest. After a short bit, be put his hands on her shoulders and would not let her go. Soon he insulted her quietly, and when her friend Robert came to stop he he went after him. He was stopped by Nest, who eventually used magic on him to knock him sprawling.

Jared Scott is the oldest child Enid Scott and Nest's age. Five eight in height with dark blond hair cut short. He possessed eyes so blue they where startling and a stoic smile that suggested a familiarity with the suffering in life. He was an introverted boy with a habit of clearing his throat before he spoke.[9]

Robert Heppler is one of Nest's friends that she hangs out with every day. Short, wiry and a mischievous face. His head is topped with an unruly shock of white-blond hair.[6] And Robert has two endearing qualities: He will eventually aggravate everyone he comes in contact[6] with and he wasnot afraid of ayone. His parents eventually took him to a psychiatrist after he had been in so may fights in grade school, having been suspended more times than anyone could remember.[10]

Josie Jackson moved to Hopewell, and opens diner in town that was the favorite breakfast and lunch spot in Hopewell. Somewhere in her thirties, she purchased the diner with money lent to her by her parents, calling it Josie's. Having worked most of her adult life as a waitress, she knew what she was about, running it with a charm, efficiency and casual attitude that made everyone feel welcome.
She was divorced and had a teenage daughter. She was younger-looking than her years, acted much younger than her mid thirties. She was possessed of big dark eyes and a ready smile, long blondish hair and a head-turning body.[14]

Albert Garcia is part of the union of steel-workers on strike from MidCon that meets at Josie's every morning. He is a small man with thinning dark hair, close-set features, and a blocky head. He moved to Hopewell less than ten years previously with his family to work at MidCon. He set the rolls in the fourteen-inch when he was working at MidCon.[15]

Derry Howe is part of the union of steel-workers on strike from MidCon that meets at Josie's every morning. Derry is a tall angular man with close-cropped hair and an intense suspicious stare. The son of Mel Riordon's sister, Derry served two tours in Vietnam. After returning he lost a wife, been arrested multiple times for DWI, and had serious disciplinary trouble at MidCon. He was erratic and error-prone.[16]

Melvin Riorden is a big, overweight crane operator, part of the on strike union group that meets at Josie's. He has spiky red hair, with a tendency to blink rapidly while he speaks.[15] He is the uncle to Derry Howe.

Penny is a bulky, heavy featured blank man whose skin shone like oiled steel, having served at least one tour in Vietnam.[17] A steady and reliable man, he was a foreman in the number-three plant at MidCon.[16] Penny had a serious dislike for Derry Howe.[17]
