Nest Freemark is a fourteen-year-old girl of Hopewell, Illinois, who is gifted with magical powers bequeathed to her from her mother's lineage. She is one of a rare few in the world who can see the spiritual warfare underlying the events in the real world. Nest is enlisted to guard the nearby park and wilderness, a regional feeding ground for feeders, as many generations of Freemark women before her. She is aided in this task by a six-inch tree-like sylvan named Pick, an insightful barn owl named Daniel, and an ethereal wolfen creature named Wraith, who appears at opportune moments to protect Nest.

Description
Nest's facial features where described as:
| “ | ...roundish with a wide forehead and broad cheekbones, pug nose with a scattering of freckles, green eyes that tended to squint, a mouth that quirked upward at the corners as if to suggest perpetual amusement, and a complexion that was starting to break out. Passably attractive, but no stunner. | „ |

While elsewhere her physique was described as:
| “ | At five feet eight inches and a hundred and twenty pounds, she was lean and rangy and tough as nails. | „ |
| -- Running with the Demon (1997), pp. 9 | ||
Nest always experienced herself as tough and never worked at it. She had always been agile even when much younger, and blessed with a runner's body.
Origin and History
Nest lived in Hopewell, Illinois with her grandparents.
She was blessed with a runners body, and loved to run. By age thirteen she had broken every cross-country record for girls fourteen and under.[1] At the end of May[1] she had entered into the Rock River Invitational against runners eighteen and under, for girls and boys. She not only managed to beat the entire field in the 10,000 meter race, but broke the state high school record by almost three minutes.[1]
Powers
Nest has the ability to see things in the magical faerie world. With this ability, she is able to see her friend Pick, Wraith and the creatures simply known as feeders.
Additionally she has some sort of power over the creatures known as feeders. If a feeder is to make eye contact with her, the magic flares within her and stripes the feeder of its life in a single gaze, just an instant is all it takes. The feeder will collapse in a heap and be melted into the earth in a black stain.[2]
