Plot summary

Wren Elessedil, a descendant of the legendary Jerle Shannara, was tasked by the shade of the Druid Allanon to travel to the distant island of Morrowindl and find the Elves to return them to the Four Lands. The catch was that not one Elf had been seen in the Four Lands for more than a hundred years. No one in the Westlands knew of them---except, finally, the Addershag.

To Morrowindl

Tiger Ty, the Wing Rider, carried Wren Ohmsford and her friend Garth to the only clear landing site on the island of Morrowindl, where the Elves might still exist. A Splinterscat, Stresa, and a tree Squeak Faun help her reach the Elves. The island has become a prison since demons began appearing. Only the magic of the Loden keeps Arbolorn safe, but its power is failing, and if the Elves are not returned to the Westland soon, they will not survive. Wren discovers she was the granddaughter of Ellenroh Elessedil, queen of elves.

Back to Westlands

Nine companions, Aurin Striate (Owl), Triss captain of the Home Guard, Cort, Dal, Ellenroh Elessedil, Eowen, Gavilian Elessedil, Wren and Garth set out on a journey to Westland, at the queen's request. Wren is to inherit the Loden and become the Queen of the Elves after Ellenroh Elessedil, though she was orphaned at birth and raised as an Ohmsford Rover. Eowen, friend and minister of her grandmother Ellenroh Elessedil, reveals that the demons are Shadowen Elves who tried to regain their lost magic and create duplicate elves to protect the elven nation from Federation. She leads the Elves to home, but loses all her companions to the demons, Darkuls and Wisteron. Only two, Wren Elessedil and Triss, a captain of HomeGuard, remain when the volcano on the island of Morrowindl erupts, destroying the island. Tiger Ty flees Morrowindl.

Return of the Elven Queen

Wren Elessedil returned to the Four Lands and re-established Arborlon, the capital of the Elves. Walker Boh returned Paranor to the 'World of Men', and later found himself turned into a Druid by the shade of Allanon.
